GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING MASTER'S DEGREE PROGRAM (WITH THESIS)

The main purpose of the Guidance and  Counseling Thesis Master's program is to increase students' knowledge and skills regarding basic and current practices in this field and to enable individuals to gain knowledge and experience in conducting scientific research in their field. Students who complete this program can carry out the guidance and counseling practices they offer in institutions more effectively by taking their knowledge and skills in the fields of guidance and psychological counseling competencies to a higher level. In addition, they can conduct scientific research by acquiring knowledge, skills and experience in scientific research methods, ethical rules, statistical analysis and reporting in scientific research.

 Purpose of the Thesis Master's Program
 The aim of the Guidance and Counseling Thesis Master's Program is to enable individuals and groups in different developmental periods to develop in a spiritually healthy way, to protect and maintain their well-being, and to overcome their academic, career, social and emotional, personal and relational difficulties, from a lifelong development perspective. To train expert psychological counselors who can effectively provide preventive, developmental and remedial mental health services/psychological assistance services that they may need, adhere to professional ethical principles, rules and laws, are sensitive to culture, follow scientific developments in their field and can conduct independent research.

 

Language of instruction 
The language of instruction of the Guidance and Counseling Master's Program with Thesis is Turkish.

Program Duration 
Thesis program: 4 semesters

Lessons
Program courses are held between 18:00-21:00 on weekdays.

Other Conditions 

  • There is a requirement to take 30 credits each semester in the program. 
  • In order to graduate, students must prepare a "Master's Thesis" and take a "Seminar" course in the Thesis Program in addition to their normal course load. 
  • It is necessary to have taken ALES within the last five years and get a minimum of 55 points from the Equal Weight (AE) score group. 

Program Opening Periods 
It is done twice a year, in the Fall and Spring semesters.

The need and awareness for psychological help services is rapidly increasing all over the world and in our country. In particular, the global Covid-19 epidemic, which all humanity has been experiencing together and simultaneously for the last two years, has visibly increased the demand for psychological assistance and support services. This increasing trend in psychological help services will continue at least at this pace, humanity will experience global crises in the near future on issues such as global warming and climate change, migration, energy and water, and these crises will create macro-level social and economic problems as well as psychological problems at the individual level. It is anticipated that humanity will have to deal with this.

While these developments at the macro level increase the need for psychological help services, social changes taking place specifically in our country also increase the need and awareness for psychological help services. Factors such as urbanization, increase in education level, increased participation of women in working life, changes in family structure, increase in average life expectancy, relatively increased welfare, and the widespread use of technology, especially communication tools, increase the speed of social change and transformation. These changes and transformations also affect human relations and harmony. strains their efforts. It becomes difficult to overcome these difficulties with the help of individual resources and social support systems, and professional psychological help services are needed. In this context, it is important to increase the number of qualified experts in the field of Guidance and Counseling.

IKU Guidance and Counseling Thesis Master's Program aims to contribute to the training of these qualified experts. Graduates of this program are expected to have the motivation to carry out high-level guidance and psychological counseling practices in areas such as schools, private counseling centers, guidance research centers, rehabilitation centers and family and children's courts, and to engage in scientific research activities in these areas. In addition, it is aimed to provide program graduates with the advanced knowledge, understanding and skills necessary to continue their postgraduate education (doctoral education) and become competent academicians in their fields.

Dear Students,

Both global crises, changes in our social structure, and new needs emerging all over the world and in our country as a result of these changes, increase the need for psychological assistance services, and therefore guidance and counseling services. In order to meet these anticipated needs in a more qualified way and present them to the society, the need for expert personnel creates the need for an increase in qualified graduates as well as experts with qualified postgraduate education who can meet these needs.In order to meet these needs, the Master's Program in Guidance and Counseling aims to provide information on subjects such as psychological counseling and guidance principles and techniques, counseling and guidance theories, current approaches to the field of counseling and guidance, and to carry out school practices in counseling and guidance. It includes gaining the skills of individual psychological counseling, group guidance and  counseling, preparing a psychoeducation/group guidance program, and psychological testing. In addition, within the scope of this program, it is aimed for candidates to have knowledge about basic quantitative and qualitative research methods, to acquire knowledge and skills in performing and reporting basic statistical analysis, and to gain experience and awareness about ethical principles and practices in scientific research. The program content is designed in a structure where theoretical courses will be enriched with field applications. In addition, the elective course pool includes courses that focus on many sub-disciplines of counseling, especially career counseling, school counseling, family counseling, crisis and trauma counseling, child and adolescent counseling, and rehabilitation counseling. In this respect, students will have the opportunity for versatile development during the education process. We have a strong staff with both theoretical and practical experience in the field of Guidance and  Counseling to teach in the program.
